Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts have been the heroes of girls and boys across the world since their inception in 1992. The characters that Naoko Takeuchi created were strong, loyal, and in many ways more like the average middle school girl then anything that had come out before. The story centers on Usagi Tsukino a 14 year old middle school student, who is average/bad at school, she is not overly brave, accident prone, and immature. She is not one’s usual idea of the hero, she is however kind, loyal, and matures as the series continues making her believable in her role as the leader of the Sailor Scouts. The rest of the group varies in personality and abilities but they like Usagi are developed as the series goes on. The “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon” series was both an anime and manga, it is considered to be a part of the Magical Girl genera as it follows all of the topes exactly. This series has had 2 television runs as anime show which were broadcasted internationally, and one live action television series, it has been movies, a live action play, and a 12 books with multiple re-printings. It has been a highly successful franchise also selling merchandise and food.

Takeuchi was able to create the realistic world in which these characters live in by basing it on her own life. With Usagi’s family biased on Takeuchi’s own, the names and focus on chemistry is based on Takeuchi’s degree in pharmacy, and even her time as a Shrine Meko lead her to add a realism in the character of Sailor Mars. This is not the only time religion plays a part of the series. From the elements of reincarnation, to the belief and messages of animism, NaokoTakeuchi uses religion as a basis for the story of Sailor Moon.
